Google is withdrawing official Adsense plugin for WordPress from May 2017

Google Adsense officials said they are withdrawing their Adsense plugin for WordPress from May 2017. This three-year-old plugin with more than 2,00,000 active installations, not updated for more than two years. Majority reviews are negative and presently it is rated at 2.7/5 stars.

Key dates

  • Early March 2017: New publishers will not be able to sign up for AdSense by using the plugin.
  • Early April 2017: Existing publishers will not be able to change their ad settings or ad units through the plugin.
  • Early May 2017: Google will no longer provide support for the plugin.

“After reviewing the AdSense Plugin for WordPress, we’ve decided that in the future we can support WordPress publishers better with new innovative features like our automatic ad formats and other upcoming initiatives. As a result, we will be deprecating the AdSense Plugin for WordPress in May 2017.”  Google said.

What will happen to my existing ads if I do nothing?

There will be no change to your ad settings as they’re stored on your WordPress site. Your existing ads and layouts will be unaffected and ads will continue to serve. However, you won’t be able to edit the position of your ads.

Google recommended switching using QuickStart or ad units, so publishers make changes to their ads going forward.

This change affects many other plugins offering the same service. Google does not endorse or support any other WordPress plugins.

Guidance for affected publishers

For a better user experience and to be able to make changes to ad units, Google recommend following steps:
